Here is a well-made intelligently-designed coffee maker that works well, has some outstanding features, but has some significant differences from common automatic drip machines. Brewing into a thermal carafe with no burner or warming plate below the carafe means the coffee will not get the bitter taste of being kept hot by continuing to cook it. But, it also will probably not be quite as hot as some people would find ideal. It's a compromise and involves personal preference. For me, the coffee is plenty hot and remains at a pleasant drinking temperature for well over an hour.

The way the carafe and its lid have to be designed to keep the steam from escaping and thus keep the coffee warm means it will pour into your cup a bit more slowly than from an ordinary carafe. To me, that's not a big deal.

Some have reported not getting the carafe properly seated, thus allowing the freshly brewed coffee to spill all over the place. I have trouble imagining how that... Read more

Searched high and low for a thermal carafe coffee maker with good reviews. Seemed no matter what model or price, at least 1/3 of respondents hated the thing. So, I went for the value priced one and it was a good choice. It did leak the first two times as I was running the water through it but not once since. Preheating the carafe really helps keep the coffee warm. It's so easy to pour the water in with the front load and we all love the aroma button for a more full flavored pot of coffee. It looks great and functions beautifully, if your hand is too big to get inside the carafe to scrub the coffee residue out, get a brush. What's the big deal? Highly recommend.

I had rated this coffeemaker with a 1 star because the plastic top part and handle of the carafe had seperated after less than six months of use. I am uping the rating to 3 star because of the excellent customer support from DeLonghi. I made a phone call to customer support and the carafe was replaced without question and at no charge for the carafe or shipping. I did not have to return the broken carafe. The replacement carafe arrived 4 days after I called DeLonghi. The customer support was excellent.

I like to enjoy a capuccino every morning, but I was a bit tired of the process of griding the beans, tamping, frothing, cleaning up, etc. Also in an effort to save time, I decided to research a super autmoatic machine. I wanted a quality machine that would froth milk for me, but I was not impressed with the Jura Capresso machines because they require extensive clean up and are, in my opinion, grossly overpriced.

My previous espresso machine was a Delonghi, and I was impressed by the quality of the machine and the espresso it produced. The EAM3500's automatic frothing mechanism was its main selling point. I was a bit hesitant about the price and longevity of the machine, but decided to go for it... I am happy that I did.

The espresso is wonderful, and the fothing mechanism is great. Clean-up is, no exaggeration, takes a few seconds before the milk jug may be returned to the fridge. Frothed milk could be a bit hotter, but it's definitely tolerable. The... Read more

This machine has now been going strong in the breakroom of my 100 person company for more than 9 months. Ever since we got the machine, people have drastically reduced making their trips to nearby Starbucks. Everybody loves the machine because of its simplicity and ease of use. Lot of people just use the frothed milk only feature as well. The cleaning is simple as well.

The only note of caution is that for lattes or cappucinos (i.e., when you use frothed or steamed milk), the drink does not come out too hot. You can adjust the temperature of the coffee by making a few settings, and the temperature is fine for normal use, but still you can not get an extra hot latte. At times when I want that, I just put my coffee filled cup in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and the problem is solved.

I would also like to recommend people to set the appropriate hardness level using the test described in the manual. I did not do that at first and ended up decalcifying far too... Read more

This machine is really just as advertised - one touch capuccino and espresso with enormous customization. You can adjust the coffee strength independent of the volume (ristretto to lungo). The milk frother works wonderfully with good tight foam, and is mixed with the coffee in the cup in perfect ratio. It produces capuccino just as good as Starbucks (assuming you use Starbucks beans), and more consistent (sometimes, depending on the barista, the capuccino can be weaker or stronger based on the amount of milk added).

I've had the machine for several months and have no complaints at all. The only minimal negatives I can think of is that I would like to have a somewhat larger bean hopper and water tank. The infuser is made of plastic, so I had some concerns about longevity, but when you take it out to clean it you can see that it is very thick solid plastic. I have been looking for the perfect automatic coffee/espresso machine for a long time. I have been to the big coffee websites. I've read all the reviews. And finally, with some trepidation, I laid down half my children's inheritance to purchase this DeLonghi Gran Dama machine, based on the couple of reviews that I found that placed it in a positive light.

Was it worth it? Is it right for you? Well, read on and learn everything there is to know about it from a guy who has put this machine through its paces for two months.

The Pros:

- Automatic burr grinder built in that grinds from a pre-filled bean reservoir. This is very convenient and it makes a fresh and fragrant cup of stuff.

- Good temperature on the coffee, and it gets to that temperature very quickly. Never overly hot. Never tepid. Just right.

After doing my own head-to-head comparison between the top DeLonghi, Saeco and Jura models, I ended up with the DeLonghi.

First and foremost, my biggest criteria was the taste of the coffee...there's no value in having a high-end espresso machine if it doesn't make coffee that's at least as good as what you can make manually. Luckily, a shop near me happens to stock all three major brands, and I was able to bring a sample of the beans I usually like and compare side by side. In addition to the DeLonghi Gran Dama, I tested the Jura Z5 and the Saeco Primea. I made a simple shot and was actually amazed by the differences - I wasn't expecting such a wide variation. Perhaps it's possible to fine tune some of these differences out, but I found the DeLonghi to be closest to my taste, with the Jura a close second. The average Kiwi in New Zealand loves their coffee. We do it a little differently here in NZ and our identical machines are called the Primadonna Avant. The machine has also been customised to suit the Australasian market too, with a few differences in the names of coffee, such as "Flat White" instead of "Latte Macciato". The machine produces great espresso which is as good as I had during my travels in Spain and Italy. The Flat Whites are a perfect start to my mornings and the 'Auto Start' is a very handy feature. I have worked out that over 4 months of use, each standard brew costs about .40 cents as apposed to NZ$4 - $5 in a cafe. To be honest, this machine makes a far superiour cup to what you can get in most cafes. I felt compelled to write this review because of some of the negative comments posted about it.
